What is damaged hair? Damaged hair usually means hair cuticles (outer layer of the hair shaft) that are cracked, chipped, roughened or worn out. Such hair is characteristically rough to touch it may also be dry and brittle. It is also easily prone to breakage.
Hair damage can be induced by a wide variety of things chemicals, cosmetics, parlour procedures, when done incorrectly.
- Frequent bleaching or dyeing (chemical damage).
- Frequent perming, straightening, or curling the hair.
- Washing the hair too frequently.
- Vigorously rubbing the hair.
- Use of inappropriate products and methods to style the hair .
- Excess sun exposure.
- Chemicals, toxic elements and pollutants in water.
- Poor diet, or vitamin deficiency.
Hair growth usually resumes after the products/procedures are discontinued, unless the effects are excessively damaging and have caused immense harm to the scalp.
Certain hair-styling techniques that pull tightly on the hair, for example, tight ‘cornrow’ braids and pigtails can lead to a type of hair loss called traction alopecia. Traction alopecia starts with hair loss in a marginal band, primarily in the front, sides and temporal areas. It may also be aggravated by headgear, wearing helmets for prolonged periods, pulling hair in bunches, light plaits/ pony tails, excessive handling of hair and amateurish massage treatment.
Splitting of ends is normally a problem of dry hair. It results in the tips of the hair being spit of frayed.
Mechanical stress and excess heat are prime reasons why hair split. Vigorous brushing and use of chemical products, such as hair colours and relaxers may also cause your hair to split.
What to do?
There is no real cure for split ends, though there may be creams that claim to ‘repair’ your spilt ends. The best way to get rid of split ends is to trim hair at regular intervals.
Problem of Vigorous Grooming:-
Too much shampooing, combing, or brushing far too many times can cause hair breakage. When hair breakage occurs, the hair appears disheveled, or thin.
One should avoid fancy, or insensitive, embellishments on hair. It is also best to avoid rubbing wet hair vigorously with a towel to dry it, or comb. Rubbing vigorously can lead to hair breakage. This is because wet hair is more elastic and susceptible to breakage than dry hair.
Role of Homoeopathy
Homoeopathic medicines act on hair making it healthy and with further taking care of your hair, you may get rid of split hair.
